Antique Style Engagement Rings: A Guide to Romantic, Whimsical Designs

Antique Style Engagement Rings: A Guide to Romantic, Whimsical Designs

Why antique style?

There's something about an antique-style engagement ring that feels different from a modern one. It feels like it has a history — like it's been loved before, or like it was waiting for you in a velvet-lined box in a Parisian antique shop.

Of course, most antique-style rings are newly made. But the best ones capture the soul of a genuine antique: the warmth of the stones, the delicacy of the metalwork, the sense that every detail was considered by hand.

At Seven Swans Fine Jewellery in Brisbane, antique-inspired design is at the heart of everything we do. Here's your guide to the styles, settings, and stones that define this beautiful aesthetic.

The stones

The stone is the heart of any antique-style ring. Modern brilliant-cut diamonds — with their 57 or 58 precisely calculated facets — are optimised for maximum light return. They're dazzling, but they can feel a little cold.

Antique cuts are different. They were fashioned by hand, with larger facets and less mathematical precision — which means they catch light in a softer, more romantic way. They glow rather than sparkle. They suit candlelight as much as sunlight.

The main antique cuts we work with at Seven Swans include:

  • Old Mine Cut — cushion-shaped, warm, and full of character
  • Old European Cut — round with a soft, romantic sparkle
  • Rose Cut — flat-bottomed, domed, and ethereally subtle
  • Moval — a rare elongated hybrid, full of personality

All of our stones are lab-grown — ethically produced and significantly more affordable than mined diamonds of equivalent quality.

The settings

The setting is what gives an antique-style ring its character. Here are the key elements to look for:

Milgrain detailing

Milgrain is a row of tiny beaded metal dots along the edges of a setting. It's one of the most recognisable hallmarks of antique jewellery, adding texture and delicacy to any design.

Antique crown settings

Rather than the simple claw prongs of a modern solitaire, antique crown settings feature ornate, sculpted prongs that echo the look of a royal crown. They elevate the stone and add a sense of grandeur.

Bezel settings

A bezel setting encircles the stone in a rim of metal. It's clean, modern, and incredibly secure — but when combined with an antique-cut stone, it takes on a romantic, understated quality.

Signet-inspired shapes

Signet rings have been worn for centuries as symbols of identity and status. A modern take on the signet — with a gypsy-set antique stone — makes for a bold, distinctive engagement ring that's unlike anything else.

Cluster settings

Cluster rings feature a central stone surrounded by smaller stones, creating a flower-like effect. They're romantic, eye-catching, and have a long history in antique jewellery.

The metals

Antique-style rings look beautiful in all metals, but yellow gold is particularly popular — it enhances the warmth of antique-cut stones and has a timeless, heirloom quality. Rose gold adds a romantic blush tone, while white gold or platinum creates a more contemporary contrast.

At Seven Swans, we work in solid 14K and 18K gold in yellow, white, and rose.

Finding your antique style

The best way to find your antique style is to look at lots of rings and notice what draws you in. Is it the warmth of the stone? The delicacy of the setting? The boldness of the shape?
